CHAPTER FIVE

Josef reported to Nik at his office immediately upon leaving Thayer's apartment. The things Teo was alluding to could, in time, impact other covens. Baltimore was miles away but too close to have dark magic once again gaining a hold. What he said and what he didn't say all added up to a coven leadership that was being taken over by something sinister.

“What do we know of the Wentworth Coven?” Nik asked once they were seated.

"Not much more than what Teo has told us. I have Zac and Martin working on it now. Wentworth owns a shipping company that was founded by his father. They have very deep roots in the Baltimore area. The Coven has existed in Baltimore since before the city was even founded. His father died nearly fifty years ago, and Roderick, being the eldest, took control." Josef began to lay it out.

“Has there been a sudden increase in his wealth?” Nik asked.

"Yes, and it coincides with when Claude Thierry took over as second and lines up with the things Teo told me," Josef responded.

"What happened to his former second, Gage Warren? If I remember right, his death was shocking but was accepted by his people as simply unfortunate and not suspect." Nik was getting a picture and not liking what he was seeing.

"I don't have all the facts. Zac and Martin are looking into it. I agree that, at the time, it seemed odd, but the Coven accepted the statement that it was an accident. With this new information, his fall from a rooftop is beginning to look less like an accident and more like someone making room for themselves." Josef referenced Teo's near death on a rooftop, which began his year-long run for his life.

"Fate was very wise, and Teo is very lucky to have Thayer." Nik made the comment, and Josef nodded. "I want to meet him. I'll have a better grasp on the situation when I meet him in person."

"He's afraid of you. That's why Thayer asked for me to meet with him. Teo is terrified of coming face to face with you." Josef informed. "He thinks that you are a monster who gets kicked out of torturing and killing people. He was told that there is a standing order that anyone entering your territory is shot on sight and that you have executed entire families for simply coming to Pittsburgh without your permission." Nik was aghast, and it took him several minutes to gather himself enough to respond.

“He genuinely believes this?” Nik finally verbalized with a strained expression.

"So much so that when I suggested he come to see you, he went into such a panic that it was all Thayer could do to calm him. He honestly believes you will kill him and enjoy every minute of it, apparently." Josef concluded.

"He's been living on the streets, hidden, pretending to be human simply because he was too afraid to come to me and ask for help," Nik stated, and Josef nodded. "Who
